The Digital Equivalent of Choosing Resume Stationery

It used to be candidates would cogitate (or at least spend a moment) on the 'look' of a hard copy resume. Heck, back in the early 90's I received resumes on scented paper, different shades of green and yellow and even some with outlines of a favorite pet. No joke, more than one arrived in the post or on the fax with a cat, strategically positioned for that subtle “I'm human” touch.

Job search is now paperless and candidates must think about how the electronic version of your resume and cover letter are viewed. I recently read an article by Shelly Palmer*. He makes some great points, but I do want to emphasize that not everything is standardized. Knowing how the technology of an organization works and following resume submittal directions are the best way to ensure compliance and search-ability. Note, PDF's are often discouraged or not accepted becuase of some software requirements.

So, if you do have to go the route of on-line application I think this article will provide solid information (no reference to pet silhouettes) to consider as you go through the process.
